The standards were very interesting to me. I cut them down to the basics of what they mean. The standards for the comprehension and collaboration portion are roughly the same among all ages. For middle school ages, the first is to just engage in the discussion. Listening to what others say but not having to participate. The high school age group must be able to initiate and participate in the discussions. They must be there prepared, having something to say. The second of the portion is the same for all ages. All students must be able to learn and teach using different media. The third is a little different. Middle school age students must acknowledge other’s arguments and evaluate the soundness. At the high school level, they must be able to evaluate the point of view, reasoning, and evidence of rhetoric. They must have a comeback. For the presentation of knowledge and ideas portion, the first for middle school is to present using details to prove a point. They must also have eye contact, volume and clear pronunciation in presentation. Everything high schoolers do must have a purpose with the other students able to follow along. The second of presentation and knowledge for middle school is they must be able to use multi media to both clarify points and add emphasis to those points. In high school, they must be able to use the media sources strategically to increase validity on their claims and increase interest in the presentation. Every secondary student must be able to adapt speech and show command of basic English based on their grade level. Overall, high school standards are nothing more than slightly increased difficulty over the middle school ones. It was interesting how close they were. It makes sense though. With more ae and practice, students should become more prepared for what is to come in their future. They level up from able to understand it to the ability to use their abilities.
