Blog Post 3

This article feels like a nice, little introduction to conversation and discussion. There are some interesting facts as well as experiments. I like all the questions at the end of each part that are in the article. The questions were almost like a survey. All kinds of information can be found out using a survey or in this case just asking yourself questions. The paper describes a conversation as “an exchange of thoughts and feeling where genial cooperation prevails.” I think it is interesting that the genial cooperation must prevail to be a conversation. I thought it was just the first part, an exchange of thoughts. I think it is strange that in the case of this article, they go deeper than just the idea of talking back and forth. That seems like more of a discussion. A discussion is defined in the paper as “discipline and focused excerption of mutual concerns but with no end point predetermined in advanced.” I think the part in the paper that talks about the different types of people in discussions. An example is the reflective analysis. Those people are “the member who keeps a record of the conversation’s development. Every twenty minutes or so, she gives a summary that focusses on shared concerns, issues skirted, and emerging common themes.” This person is involved in each a conversation and a discussion. The two seem similar and they are both involved in the scheme of things. By themselves, both a conversation and discussion are useful. When they get combined into one entity, they get more powerful. The conversation is a thought that makes it easier to be a part of a discussion. The people do not want to be in the discussion if their ideas are not shared positively. I just thought the overall examples and claims of the idea’s effectiveness was interesting. This is a paper with things that I am interested in. I am interested in  how speech works so this was good.
